Serengeti District Council is one of the seven districts of Mara Region of Tanzania. Its administrative centre is the town of Mugumu. It is home to part of the world-famous Serengeti National Park and contains one of the western gates to the park.
The Serengeti District was established in 1974 after being divided from Musoma District while Mugumu was made the District headquarters.
Ms. A. Nyemela was appointed the first District Commissioner by Mr. B. Salim was appointed the first District Development Director. When the district was established it had 4 divisions of Rogoro, Serengeti, Nansimo and Kenkombyo as well as two Serengeti and Nyamuswa constituencies.
In 1978 Bunda District was established, Ngoreme Ward which was part of Musoma District became Ngoreme Division in Serengeti District while Nansimo and Kenkombyo Wards formed Bunda District, so Serengeti District remained with 2 divisions of Rongoro and Ngoreme. Currently the Serengeti District has 4 Divisions, 30 Wards and 78 Villages, 363 Suburbs and 41,570 Households.
According to the National Population and Housing Census, in 1978 the Serengeti District had a population of 207,688, including residents of Bunda District before it was formed. Subsequent censuses showed that in 1988 it had 111,710 people, in 2002 it had 176,609 people, 84,263 men and 92,346 women.
The 2012 Census District had 249,420 Residents of which 121,399 were males (48.68%) and 128,021 females (51.33%).
Using the population and housing census estimates of 201, in 2016 the Serengeti District was estimated to have 275,223 people of whom 133,958 are males and 141,265 females
Geography and Climate of the District
The Serengeti District has an area of 10,373 km and is located between 10 ° 30 degrees south 20 ° 40 ° south of the equator 34 ° 15 ’east 35 ° 15’ east of the Greenwich Meridian. Within 7,000 square kilometers is the Serengeti National Park. In addition, 189.63 square kilometers is the area of ”Ikorongo Game Reserve”. 66.39 square kilometers is the Grumeti Game Reserve, and 245.6 square kilometers is an open area. The remaining 659 square kilometers are agricultural, animal husbandry and human settlements.
The district receives an average rainfall between 600-1200 mm. It rains twice a year between August-December and February to April. The upper belt gets an average of 1200 mm, the middle zone averages 1000-1200 mm and the lower zone 600 -1000 mm. Average temperature 26 ° C during the dry season.
