Tarime District Council is one of the seven districts of the Mara Region of Tanzania, East Africa. It was previously known as the “North Mara District”. Its administrative seat is Tarime town. It is bordered from the north to east by the Kenyan districts of Migori, Trans Mara and Kuria East and West Districts, and to the east by the Maasai Mara game reserve. To the south it is bordered across the Mara River by the Serengeti and Butiama districts, and to the west by Rorya District.
The local government system in Tanzania was established by the Constitution of the Republic of Tanzania of 1977 under Articles 145 and 146. The district council authorities conduct the process of operationalizing the local government system. Taremi County Council was formally established on January 1, 1984 under the provisions of Sections 8 and 9 of the Local Government (County Powers) Act 1982.
Tarime District Council operates like any other councils in Tanzania, with statutory powers and in line with the legislation and regulations enacted by Parliament under Local Government Act No. 7 of 1982. The Council is given a wide range of functions which include: (i) to maintain peace, order and good governance in area of its jurisdiction and facilitating it, (ii) promoting the social and economic well-being of all persons in its area of jurisdiction; (3) Taking into account the national policies and plans for rural and urban development and the promotion of social and economic development in its area of competence.
Tarim District Council is one of 166 local authorities in Tanzania implementing various reform measures under the Local Government Reform Program (LGRP) Phase I and II, and the council expects to improve service delivery to the public. To fulfill the functions of the council as summarized in Section 111 of the Local Government (County Powers) Act 1982, the council requires a strategic decision to drive sustainable local economic development through strategic planning at the district level.
North Mara Gold Mine is located within Tarime District. It is operated by Acacia Mining.
According to the 2002 Tanzania National Census, the population of the Tarime District was 492,798. According to the 2012 Tanzania National Census, the population of Tarime District was 339,693
In 2002 Tarime District contained 41 wards, but since the separation off of Rorya District in 2007, Tarime District has been reduced to fewer wards. As of 2012, Tarime District was administratively divided into 30 wards.
