Kahama Town Council-Shinyanga, Tanzania

Kahama Town Council was officially published on 15th October 2010 through Government Notice No 393; and begun to execute its functions on 17th June 2011 as per certificate.
Kahama Town is in Kahama District which is one of the three (3) Districts in Shinyanga Region namely Kishapu, Shinyanga and Kahama. Shinyanga Region consists of five (5) Councils named Kishapu D.C, Shinyanga M.C, Shinyanga D.C Kahama D.C, Kahama T.C
Kahama Town Council covers an area of 817,641.1 Ha (817.64 km2), the public administration of the Town Council Administratively is made up with 1 division namely Kahama Mjini that has 11 wards and some of the area from Dakama 3 wards, Msalala 2 wards and Isagehe 4 wards which make the Kahama Town Council to be with 20 wards, 47 villages and 300 sub-villages (Vitongoji’).
Population & Ethnic groups
The population of Kahama Town Council was estimated to have 115,158 as per census of 2002 and its projection for the year 2012 to be 242,038 and an annual growth rate of population is 3.3%. The population of Kahama Town Council consists principally of Wasukuma, Wasumbwa and Wanyamwezi. Other ethnic groups are known as Waha, Wahangaza and Wadakama. The population density is estimated at 442 Persons per sq. km. The high growth rate is attributed to immigration rather than to human multiplication. However there are other factors, which have attributed this high growth rate, this are:-
Fairly adequate rainfall and availability of relatively fertile soils that attracts farming practices as compared to other districts in the region.
The Town council is endowed with mineral resources especially gold.
The Town Council is a big trading centre in the regional.
Kahama is located in the Kahama District of the Shinyanga Region, approximately 109 kilometres (68 mi), by road, south-west of Shinyanga where the regional headquarters are located. The town is approximately 536 kilometres (333 mi), by road, north-west of Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania.
