Historically, the first public electricity source in Tanzania was established by German settlers, then called Tanganyika in 1908 in Dar es Salaam. It served the railway workshops and the part of the city where the settlers often resided. In 1920, when the Tanganyika territory was placed under the protection of Great Britain, a state electricity department was formed to take over and manage the public supplies left by the Germans. In 1931, the government entrusted the project to Dar es Salaam and those in other regions of the country (Dodoma, Tabora and Kigoma) to private institutions. One of these companies was Tanganyika Electric Supply Company Ltd. (TANESCO) and the other company is Dar es Salaam and District Electric Supply Company Ltd (DARESCO). The two companies were merged in 1964 and subsequently changed their name to Tanzania Electricity Supply Corporation (TANESCO).
