TIB Development Bank Limited was established in November 1970 by Act of Parliament, the Tanzania Investment Bank Act 1970 with the primary objective of financing development with a focus on industrialization in the country. TIB was able to fulfill its tasks with remarkable success in establishing textile, leather, paper and other manufacturing industries until the macroeconomic instability of the 1980s when the country’s economy deteriorated.
The economic reforms of the 1990s highlighted the lack of long-term financing as it was not provided by any of the commercial and financial institutions operating in the country at that time. Therefore, the government renamed TIB as a Development Finance Corporation (DFI) in 2005. The bank completed the transition to DFI with participation focusing primarily on the infrastructure, manufacturing (agri-processing, mining and general manufacturing) oil and gas and services sector.
