Occupational Safety and Health Authority(OSHA) is a government agency under the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment, and Disabled). This organization has a responsibility to protect employees from workplace hazards that may lead to illness and accidents. This commitment is exercised through the implementation of Law No. 5 of Occupational Health and Safety in 2003.
OSHA’s history dates back to 2001 when it was established by Government Agencies Act No. 30 of 1997 as part of a plan for improvement in the provision of government services to citizens. The purpose of establishing OSHA is to have a government tool for overseeing safety and health in the workplace.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is responsible for ensuring that employees work in a safe and secure environment by complying with established procedures to prevent occupational accidents and diseases.
This institution has four main responsibilities;
Supervising the implementation of Law No. (5) of 2003 regarding safety, health and the workplace.
Advise the government on occupational safety and health issues, related to the various policies and regulations for safety and health management in the country, including advising on how to ratify international conventions related to safety and health issues.
Raising awareness among stakeholders about safety and health issues by offering various training courses including providing professional advice to stakeholders
Conducting various studies related to occupational safety and health issues to guide the government on the best ways to implement the mentioned laws.
In the course of carrying out the said responsibilities, the Agency performs various functions as follows;
registration of workplaces;
Perform general inspections.
conduct special inspections such as electrical safety checks; pressure vessels and checking lifting devices;
risk assessment;
Conducting an audit of the drawings and installations of the premises;
Carry out health and disease screening in accordance with the relevant workplace in the workplace; conducting an investigation into the accident;
Conduct industrial health surveys and measurements including;
Provide expert advice on occupational health and safety issues.
