History
On February 12, 2018, Hazrat. The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, under his powers under Article 36(1) of the 1977 Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, has issued an “Order for Improvements in the Structure of the Office of the Attorney General” through Government Proclamation No. No. 48 of 2018 with the aim of improving legal services in the public sector.
The amendment order recognized the existence of the Public Prosecutor’s Office responsible for providing legal advice to the central government, local government authorities, government departments and public bodies; Drafting of bills preparation of various legal documents, draft resolutions of Parliament, etc., in parallel with the establishment of the National Prosecutor’s Office dealing with all criminal cases in the courts; The Office of the Attorney General, which oversees and administers all government-related litigation and arbitration proceedings.
The activities of the Attorney General’s Office were transferred to the Attorney General in 1965 until February of this year when the Attorney General’s Office was re-established. Hence, as a result of these improvements to the structure of the Attorney General’s office, on February 13, 2018, Honorable. The President of the United Republic of Tanzania saw the need to restore the office, ordering the establishment of the Attorney General’s Office through Government Proclamation No. 50 for 2018.
On 15 April 2018, His Excellency the President of the United Republic of Tanzania appointed Dr. Clement Julius Machamba as the Attorney General and Dr. Ali Saleh Busi as Deputy Attorney General. Additionally, on 7 July 2018, Hazrat. The structure of the Attorney General’s Office, the National Prosecution Office, and the Office of the Attorney General has been approved by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania.
