Ubongo gas plant I
background
From 2003 through 2005, Tanzania experienced severe drought across the country, which reduced water levels in major hydroelectric reservoirs. TANESCO has received funds from the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania to urgently finance an emergency power generation project to bridge the power supply gap in the national grid due to drought.
TANESCO has contracted German M/S Lahmeyer International for consultancy services and has contracted with M/S Wärtsilä Company of Finland to build the 100MW owned TANESCO Gas Plat in Ubungo.
The gas plant uses locally available natural Songo Songo gas as a fuel source. The plant is equipped with twelve generating units, each with a capacity of 8.73 MW, with a total installed capacity of 104 MW. The available capacity of twelve generating units is 102.5 MW. The station is connected to the national grid through the Ubungo National Grid Substation.
