Positions on a Soccer Team
Each football team has 11 players – 1 goalkeeper and 10 field players. Each player, whether playing defensive or offensive, works to help the team score goals – and prevent the other team from scoring. The following list outlines the role of each public office in the field:
>Goalkeeper: The goalkeeper is the only player allowed to use his hands, and this activity is limited to a rectangular penalty area extending 18 yards from each side of the goal.
>> Defenders: They play in front of the goalkeeper, and their primary duty is to prevent the opponent from scoring. The outside fullback plays on the right and left sides and rarely moves from either side of the court. Central defenders play in the middle of the field and usually cover the opponent’s top scorer or attacker(s).
>> Midfielders: These are the link between defense and attack. Midfielders have to be the fittest players on the field because they are expected to pull off the biggest performance of the match. They must be able to penetrate deep into enemy territory when attacking and move into defense when the opponent is holding the ball.
>> Attackers: Their main task is to score or create goals for teammates. The central striker, also known as the striker, should be the team’s top scorer and the most dangerous player in the offensive third of the field.
