What Is the Offside Rule in Soccer?
The offside rule is the most controversial principle of football (regardless of where the game is played), although what is known as Law 11 is not very difficult to understand. Here’s what it’s all about intrusion:
A player is caught offside if he is closer to the opponent’s goal than the ball and the last opponent (including the goalkeeper) when his teammate plays the ball towards him. In other words, a player can receive the ball from one of his teammates only if there are at least two players either equally with him or between him and the goal or unless his teammate plays the ball in the opposite direction to him.
It is not a crime in and of itself to be an intruder. A player is only penalized for being an offside if he is deemed to be participating in active play. Therefore a player can only be called a hacker if:
>> In the discount half.
>> Interfering with play (ie it is part of the attack movement).
>> Interfering with the opponent (ie it prevents the opponent from defending against the offensive movement).
>> Gain any advantage by being in this position.
