Kwimba District Council is one of the seven districts of the Mwanza Region of Tanzania. It is bordered to the north by the Magu District, to the east by Maswa District and Kishapu District, to the south by Shinyanga Rural District, and to the west by Misungwi District. The district seat is at Ngudu. Sumve is another important settlement in Kwimba District, hosting a hospital and large church.
The majority of the residents of Kwimba are Wasukuma from the Sukuma tribe and speak Sukuma along with Swahili. Most of the residents are engaged in the subsistence farming of rice, sweet potatoes, cassava, millet or maize.
Kwimba District is one of the oldest districts in the eight Districts of Mwanza Region. In order to ensure that essential services including administrative services are brought closer to the people, in 1973 the Government divided Kwimba District and established two Kwimba and Magu Districts. Also in 1996 Kwimba District was divided into the current Misungwi and Kwimba Districts.
Location
Kwimba District is located at latitudes 2o 45 ’and 3o 53’ South of the Equator and longitude 33o and 33o 30 ’East of Meridiani. The North District is bordered by Magu District, the East is bordered by Maswa District, the South is bordered by Kishapu District and Shinyanga Rural and the West is bordered by Misungwi District.
Area and Areas of Administration
Kwimba District has an area of 3,903 square kilometers, has five (5) Divisions, 30 Wards, 119 Villages, 871 Suburbs and Small Town Authority. It also has two (2) constituencies for Parliamentary and Councilor Elections which are Kwimba and Sumve. The District Headquarters is Ngudu located 98 km from the Mwanza Regional Headquarters.
Population.
According to the 2012 Population and Housing Census, Kwimba district had a total population of 406,509 people out of which 198,096 women and 208,414 men. The annual population growth is 1.9% and the population capacity is 106 square kilometers. Currently the district is estimated to have 462,663 people of whom 237,203 are males and 225,460 females (estimates of National Institute statistics ending December 2016)
Climate.
Kwimba District is for the most part flatlands, valleys with a few elevations and occasional hillsides. The climate of this District is generally dry, where rainfall is scarce, unreliable or easily predictable. The average annual rainfall is 700-1200 millimeters. The average temperature is 250-330C degrees per year; and dry winds almost all year round. The rainy season is divided into three main parts namely the short rainy season (autumn) which runs from mid-October to December, the long rainy season (spring) is between February to May and the summer solstice season. it is between June to mid-October.
In 2012, Kwimba District was divided into five divisions and 30 wards.
