Sumbawanga Municipal Council is the District Headquarters and Rukwa Region located in Southwest Tanzania at Latitude 07045 ’and 080 09’ South and Longitude 310 27 ’and 310 49’ East. The council is surrounded by Sumbawanga, Kalambo and Nkasi District Councils.

WEATHER
Sumbawanga Municipality has a cool climate with moderate temperatures for most of the year, with 270C temperatures from September to January. Cold and dry conditions run from May to November. July is a very cold month that reaches 50C. The rainy season runs from November to April. The average rainfall is 646.8 mm per year often accompanied by thunder and lightning.
POPULATION
The 2012 Census results show that the population for Sumbawanga Municipal Council is 209,793 of whom 100,734 are males and 109,059 are women and that a total of 62,951 people or 43% have increased from 146,842 people (Me 71,176 and Ke 75,666) in 2002. Given the average population growth rate of 3.5% in 2016 we estimate to have 241,513 People out of which 115,964 Men and 125,548 Women.
Sumbawanga Urban District is one of the four districts in the Rukwa Region of Tanzania. It is bordered to the north by Lake Rukwa, to the east by the Mbeya Region, to the south by the Sumbawanga Rural District and to the west by the Nkasi District. The district (and regional) capital is Sumbawanga.
