Mbalawala Coal Project/ Ngaka Basin
The Ngaka coal project is Tancoal’s flagship project. Located in the vast coalfields of southwestern Tanzania, the Ngaka Basin has the capacity to host up to 1 billion tons of high-quality thermal coal.
The Ngaka Basin consists of the Mbalawala sub-basin in the south and the Mboyura Mkapa sub-basin in the north. Tancoal’s total coal resources are 367 million tons, and you expect this number to rise significantly with further drilling in Mbalawala and Mbuyura-Mkapa.
Coal mining began in Ngaka in August 2011, with initial mining conducted through a simple and low-cost “truck and shovel” operation, selling up to 600,000 tons per year of unwashed coal to local customers in Tanzania.
As the mining rate increases, Tancoal will increase coal production to meet the requirements of the power plant expected to be commissioned in 2021.
