Societe Petroliere is a private limited liability company incorporated in the Republic of Rwanda with the principal activity of importing, distributing and marketing petroleum products through eighteen retail stations across the country and is 100% locally owned.
The origins of the company go back to 1967, when it was known as Fina Rwanda, in 1985 the company merged with BP to create BP Fina Rwanda. But that wasn’t the only adjustment the company had made over the years because later during 1998 the company was sold to ENGEN, which then transferred it to Sakirwa Petroleum in 2001, then adopted a new name, Société Pétrolière, in 2007 after Change in the shareholding structure. Since 2010, the company has been named, Société Pétrolière Limited (SP Ltd) based on the new company law adopted by the Government of Rwanda in 2009.
Today, the company has positioned itself as the sector leader in the country and is currently an equal employer with a total workforce of around 60 employees including 15 workers from SP Aviation, 2 from SP Kenya Limited and SP Tanzania Limited.

The company has stayed close to growing Rwanda over the past years, and has continued to grow with it. Another asset is its range of products, including diesel fuel, kerosene, JET A1, lubricants and LPG. The company also owns its own gas bottling plant in the Giekundo Industrial Zone.
Under its current projects, the company is fully focused on building its new warehouses, outside of Kigali, which will give it more fuel capacity to continue growing in the country and continue its leadership in this sector. Storage capacity remains a challenge in the oil industry in Rwanda, so this new deposit will help them meet this goal, and also cooperate in the development of the entire sector in the country.
