About the Company
History
Unilever is a company founded on a sense of purpose, and our unique heritage continues to shape the way we do business today.
Located in Port Sunlight, the historic home of Unilever in the UK, the Unilever Art, Archives and Records team takes care of one of the world’s most important collections of business records.
The team is responsible for collecting and managing the centuries-old Unilever Archives – in fact, our oldest document dates back to 1292.
The collections contain original documents, print sources, photos, and films, for example, our first ever ad on television for S.R Gibbs’ toothpaste.
There are meticulous books that report on company board meetings, financial records, a wealth of advertisements and examples of packaging, as well as architectural plans and maps of Unilever’s current and past locations.
Popular brands, such as Colman’s, Wall’s, Lipton, Persil, Pears Soap, Lux, PG Tips, and Marmite, all feature.
Access to our groups
For the safety and well-being of visitors and staff in response to the ongoing pandemic, we have taken the decision to close the Unilever Art Library and Archive and Records Management in Port Sunlight until further notice.
We cannot currently say when we will reopen, but we continue to monitor the situation closely. Any updates to our services will be posted on this page.
Queries
The staff of Unilever Art, Archives and Records Administration remain mostly working from home but still welcome your inquiries. Please be aware that as we are unable to access groups as usual, there may be a delay in our response.
Researchers
We are not accepting any research visit requests at this time. Researchers may continue to email us their inquiries, but it is advised that access to our groups is currently limited.

sustainable growth
In 1883, Sunlight Soap was launched in the UK by our founder – he was a pioneer, he was innovative and had a purpose: to spread cleanliness and make it accessible to ordinary people. That was sustainable living, even back then. We now have over 400 brands and are still driven by purpose.
We want to do more good for our planet and our society – not just do less harm. We want to deal with the social and environmental issues facing the world and we want to improve people’s lives with our products.
We have been pioneers, innovators and future makers for over 120 years – we plan to continue to do so. We plan to do this sustainably.
Promote our goal
Every element of our business model is connected: each element is powered by another, and thus drives the next. Through this model, we work to create sustainable value for all of our stakeholders, while maintaining our goal.
