The objective of the Second Chance Matric is to provide support to learners in South Africa who have not been able to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Extended Senior Certificate (SC), thereby meeting the NDP goals and thus increasing the learner retention sector.

The Department of Basic Education’s Second Chance Matric program provides support for learners who wish to rewrite subjects. It helps them to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate (SC) and obtain a high school diploma from Class 12.

  • Learners can meet NSC or SC requirements and obtain matric from grade 12
  • Increase learner retention
  • Increase computer skills, job opportunities and career path
  • Learners can access scholarship opportunities for further studies

Face-to-face lessons are available at locations across the country, as well as online, television, and radio programs.

The following opportunities for rewriting exist:

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) supplementary exams – March
  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) progressed learners (learners who wrote the NSC the previous year but did not sit for all 6 subjects) – June
