Pangani District Council is one of the eight districts and one of 11 administrative councils in Tanga Region in north eastern Tanzania. As of the 2012 census, the population was Pangani district was 54,025, making it the least populous district in Tanga region. The district seat (capital) and largest settlement in Pangani district is the town of Pangani. The district is named after the historic Pangani River.
DISTRICT GEOGRAPHY
Pangani District is one of eight (8) districts and eleven (11) Councils that make up Tanga Region. Geographically Pangani District is located south of Tanga City, to the east it borders the Indian Ocean, West Handeni District, North Muheza District and South Bagamoyo District, Coast Region. The district is located 47 Kms from the Regional Headquarters. The district covers an area of 1,830.8 Square Kilometers (KM 2), and the largest part is in the Coastal Zone where the Pangani River enters the Indian Ocean.
ADMINISTRATION AND POPULATION
Pangani District is made up of 4 Divisions, 14 Wards, 33 Villages and 96 Suburbs. According to the 2012 Population and Housing Census, the District had a total population of 54,025 of whom 26,870 were males and 27,155 females and 13,177 households were households. Currently the district is estimated to have 59,502 people including 29,571 men and 29,931 women, there are 14,413 households with an average size of 4.1 people per household. The annual population increase is estimated at 2.2% and the population density per square kilometer (1Km2) is 29.5 people.
