The name Mdloti is the Zulu word for the wild tobacco that grows here.

Umdloti, although still a small and peaceful town, is located six miles [10 km] north of Umhlanga Rocks. It has two business centres, a post office and several restaurants. The city is divided in two by the old, mature sand dunes that make up the upper and lower parts of the city. A natural rock dam near the shore creates a safe swimming area. Its southern borders include native and tropical shrubs and sugarcane fields. To the north are the Umdloti and Mwalo rivers. To the west, it flows through the local bush and beyond, the Bellamont district of Tongat-Hollet Sugar.

The eagle is famous for the dolphins that swim close to the shore in the early morning, and from July to November is a good time for whale watching when whales are often seen from shore.
